how Harley does it have to be to be a Harley Davidson?

hello everyone,
i have been riding for over five years now, and i think its time to get a Harley Davidson. i have a million and one questions. unfortunately i don't know anyone who has a Harley. so i thought i would join this tribe to maybe chat with some cool, and, helpful people who could in lighten me in some of the dos and don'ts on HD etiquette, and some advice on buying/building my first Harley Davidson.

first question,
how Harley does it have to be to be a Harley Davidson?
if i were to buy a HD and i got a wide tire kit, or a after market larger engine
, would i have to stop calling it a Harley Davidson.
what if i was to built a bike piece by piece, how much of it would have to be Harley Davidson, how much of it could be Harley Davidson Replica, and how much could be other?
thax for spending the time on a newbie.

Are there any other XL1200S Sportster wranglers that have an engine that likes to lubricate outside the carb too??
I just had my oil changed today, and was politely informed by the person in the service area that they do spew oil out the carb normally.....
I am having a hard time accepting this information; most engines I run usually like to lubricate the insides.

(Fact or Fiction, based on your experience please...)
Thanks !

I'm no rocket scientist, but i have been dealing with shovels for quite a few years now. Also, if anyone is thinking of riding up to Alaska and needs any info I might be of help in that area too.
Charity Bike Build

Ok Biker Brothers and Sisters here it is...

My friend and I are going to be hosting a weekly bike night at his bar, Club Diablo (http://www.clubdiablo.com/) for next spring 2006. One of the main features of this bike night will be a custom chopper, I (South Side Kustoms) will be building for raffle, with the ALL the proceeds of this raffle to go to The Western New York Food Bank and The Make A Wish Foundation.

So this is where I need help. I need to get this bike build financed. I need a frame/motor/everything. So I am looking for donations of parts/money for this build for charity. Like I said ALL money from the raffle will be going to these 2 great charities. Anyone who donates a part/money for this build will get a receipt with the value of the part/money, so you can right it off to Uncle Sam and hey YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING REALLY NICE at the same time!

To make a donation of parts/money or if you have any questions or would like to help...please feel free to contact me at southsidekustoms@adelphia.net

Sacramento, Calif.—On Sunday, June 26th 2005, the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club (A.K.A. the Green & White) in conjunction with Motor’n Cause We Care Promotions will hold a very important and milestone motorcycling event. Starting from the West steps of our State Capital and ending in Placerville, Ca., the event will be held in an effort to raise funds and bring awareness to a rare, deadly and little known disease called “Scleroderma.” Primarily affecting women, scleroderma’s cause is yet unknown. It is not contagious and not inherited; still it kills thousands of women between the ages of 30 and 50 each year. Unlike AIDS and cancer, scleroderma has few lobbyists, almost no funding for research and very little public awareness. With no known cure, scleroderma is like an invisible monster, growing stronger everyday as it stalks and claims the lives of our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. With your support a cure could be found!!!

Childhood sweethearts, Cathy and I were married inside All Hallows Catholic Church, where I, along with our two sons Ryan and Nick, recently attended her funeral. Though our 14-year marriage ended in divorce, it’s strange how circumstances in a person’s life can come full circle. Cathy became the Chapter Founder and Sacramento liaison to the National Scleroderma Foundation, working to generate awareness and funding to help fight the disease. I, on the other hand, became Chapter President of a legendary motorcycle club called the Boozefighters. Originally formed by bomber crews after WW II and profiled in several A&E and Discovery Channel specials the club is probably best known for being the inspiration for the classic 1952 movie “The Wild One.”

On her deathbed, just days before she died, Cathy wrote a letter detailing how scleroderma has affected her life. The following is the last sentence of the last letter Cathy would ever write. “ It is my hope to bring awareness and education that one day there may be a cure for this complicated and complex disease.” The Boozefighters have now vowed to champion Cathy’s quest for scleroderma awareness by continuing the work she had so bravely started. June is National scleroderma awareness month, and I am happy to report, this event is already generating National attention!

Any and all businesses, celebrities, public officials, or organizations that wish to get on board and support this one-of-a-kind milestone event, please don’t hesitate to call.
Why does my starter grind?

I have a late '79 FXEF with an electric start. When I go to start it, there is a nasty-ass gear grinding noise. I try several times to start it, sometimes it only clicks, sometimes it grinds, and sometimes it starts. This is only a problem on cold starts. Doesn't happen when the bike is warm. Tore down the starter, which looks unremarkable inside, and installed a new solenoid. Went to start it- same dang thing. Any ideas?

What is the long ride you have ever done?

Was wondering what is the longest ride miles or time that you have done on a Harley. Mine would have to be the solo 2 month trip from San Francisco to Boston to Fairbanks and back to SF on my 2000 FXDWG.

I am planning to take a month each for Austraila and New Zealand in the upcoming years. I may also take my KTM and go back to Alaska to hit the top of the world highway.
